A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
