Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
